“Gardening is a skill that seems to be lost on a large portion of Western society. After all, why should I grow a tomato bush when I can have someone else do it? I’ll just pick one up at the grocery store for 60 cents. But in Africa, food doesn’t come that easy. Economic restraints make eating fresh and healthy a less-than-viable option.”

News about SFH's School Garden in Freetown, Sierra Leone

Last year, Carlo Petrini challenged Slow Food Helsinki to adopt a garden in Africa. Later that year, we began cooperating with Children Crossing Cultures, which was raising funds to found a garden at a girls’ school in Sierra Leone.

Our cooperation officially began at the Slow Food Helsinki Harvest Dinner. The coordinator of Children Crossing Cultures, Sori Obai Kamara, spoke to the audience about the need for help and, for inspiration, performed African music with his band. Our raffle at the event earned the first euros towards adopting a garden.

By the end of the year, Slow Food Helsinki had raised 900 euro towards the garden at Billnäs Finland School for Girls in Yams Farm, Freetown, Sierra Leone. Representatives from Children Crossing Cultures personally delivered the donation to the women’s group in a meeting of the community elders. The outlines for the garden were measured and marked, and our donation has given them gardening equipment, watering cans, hoes, shovels, as well as seeds, fertilizer, 24 chickens and a sheep.

The workers and students at the school and the elders of the community have thanked Slow Food Helsinki many times for the donation and have promised to do their best to use the money wisely. As was said by Mrs. Fatmata Shawers, who donated the land for the school, “We will put our hands together in the realization of this garden that will feed the children in the Billnäs Finland School.”

Slow Food Helsinki hopes that this garden will help to improve the agriculture in the area sustainably and provide food and an income to the school.

Slow Food Helsinki would like to introduce our new leader for 2013, Ann Plough

Tell us a little bit about your background.

I was born and raised in Seattle, but I moved to Munich to work for an American company for three  years. However, I eventually married a Finn and moved to Helsinki.

How did you get interested in Slow Food?

I first got interested in Slow Food when I was in San Francisco for a Slow Food festival. I  got  reconnected to the idea when Carlo Petrini visited Helsinki last year. I had read his book on one of my travels, loved the philosophy, and wanted to meet him when he came to Helsinki. I joined Slow Food Helsinki after going and hearing him speak.

What is in store for Slow Food Helsinki this year?

I'd like to see it connected with organizations that have the same philosophy as we do. In the Helsinki region, as a Finnish capital, there's a larger population that is interested in food, and they have the least access to local production. We can make that farm to table connection by working together with others who have this same vision. We have an obligation and an opportunity to connect with those organizations that are already bringing the food from the farms directly to co-producers.
